Non-IT people usually have some idea how to setup some sort of online business but they are not sure where to start, or they are to afraid of technology. So they often ask me, I would like to run my own site, but I’m not sure where to start? Should I start learning programming? Should I learn HTML, should I learn this or learn that?

For a technology outsider things may appear confusing at first because there are to many different technologies. But I’ll try to simplify where you can get started with online business.

What you need is:

hosting – web space needed to store your web page, usually 3rd party server.
domain name – symbolical name like www.mySite.com used to address your site
web page – web page that represents the content itself which will describe you business

Method 1

Use free or cheap content builder. Content builders are free sites that offer you ability to build site quickly on drag&drop principle without additional programming. These sites also offer free hosting and free domain so you have no costs for starting your web based business. You also need absolutely no programming skills to start web business mentioned way.
Free content builders like that are:
Blinkweb
Weebly
Wordpress
and many others.

Method 2

Build your own web site. For this approach you will have to buy web hosting (aprox. 5$ per month) and buy a domain name (aprox 10$ per year). After you get a domain and a hosting space to host you web you need to build a web itself. Basic of web design is scripting language called HTML. It describes a Appearance of your web page. It is static in structure, so if you need to add dynamic elements you’ll have to use server side scripting like PHP & MySQL to store your user data & queries.

Method 3

Don’t want to create site yourself? You don’t need to, you can hire someone to create it for you, you have tons of sites like http://www.freelancer.com/ where you can place a bid to millions of freelance developers waiting to do a cheap job for you.
So these are basic method available to start up your online business. So in fact technology is not a problem if you have a strong business model and you believe you can kick start it off the ground.
